Carlos Alcaraz denied Jannik Sinner his third grand slam title of the season as the Spaniard defeated the top-seeded player 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, and 6-4 in the 2025 US Open final. After defeating Alcaraz in the Wimbledon Men’s Singles’ final back in July, Sinner would have been confident of retaining the US Open trophy but sharp movement and clear decision making helped Alcaraz win his second US Open title and sixth grand slam title overall.

The final encounter of the 2025 US Open was unfortuantely delayed as more security measures had to be put in place as the sitting US president Donald Trump also attended the match. During the first set, one could easily see the empty seats but the venue was packed with spectators by the end of the second set.

The 2024 US Open winner, Sinner, had the opportunity to retain the US Open title and could have become the first men's singles player to do since 2008 but Alcaraz denied his rival that opportunity by winning his sixth grand slam in the fourth set of the match.

Sinner felt that Alcaraz played better on the day and deserved the win. The Italian said, “He has improved. I felt like he was a bit cleaner today, the things that I did well in London, he did better today, and, you know, that's the result. I felt like he was doing everything slightly better today, especially serving. I'll give lots of credit to him because he handled the situation better than I did and he raised his level when he had to. I'm still proud of myself about the season I'm playing, but yeah, he played better than me today.”

Jannik Sinner believes he was very predictable in the 2025 US Open

The Italian ace also discussed his predictability on the evening and his desire to better his overall game ahead of his next stop in China. As revealed to the reporters after the match, the 2024 US Open winner said, “I was very predictable today on court in a way of, he did many things. He changed up the game. That's also his style of how he plays. Now, it's going to be on me if I want to make changes or not. I'm trying to be more prepared for the next match when I will play against him.”

Sinner continued on how a tougher route to the final could prove to be a blessing in disguise, as it allows one to try more things. The baseliner continued, “ I feel it depends on how you arrive to play against Carlos, you know, one thing is when the score line you know matches before are comfortable, but you always do the same things. For example during this tournament I didn't make one certain volley, I didn't use a lot of drop shots, and then you arrive to play against Carlos where where you have to go out of the comfort zone. So ,I'm going to aim to maybe even losing some matches from now on but trying to make some changes, to be a bit more unpredictable as as a player and because I think that's the what I have to do trying to become a better tennis player and at the end of the day that's my main goal.

The 2025 Wimbledon Men’s Singles champion also discussed his wonderful season so far, which has helped him double his grand slam tally from 2 to 4 after the Italian bagged the Australian Open title as well earlier this year. He concluded, “The season, result-wise, amazing, four grand slam finals of the year, two grand slams, two times lost in the final. It's incredible results, so very happy, and now we try to finish the year as strong as we can.”
